I laid before the Marquess of Lansdowne your letter of the 5th instant relating to a vacant piece of land near the British Post Office at Shanghai.
The First Commissioner of His Majesty's Works with whom His Lordship has been in communication on the subject, has given instructions to the Board's Surveyor in China not to effect a sale of the ground without special reference to and sanction by him.
The original enclosures in your letter are returned herewith.
